# HD Voice and Video Calls in Signal

> Make free HD voice and video calls over WiFi or mobile data. Every Signal call is protected by the same end-to-end encryption as your messages.

Signal lets you make high-definition voice and video calls using your phone's data connection over WiFi, 4G, or 5G. These calls are completely free and do not use your cellular minutes. Most importantly, every call is protected by end-to-end encryption, so your conversations stay private between you and the person you are talking to.

## Make a Voice Call

Open a conversation with any Signal contact and tap the phone icon at the top of the screen to start an HD voice call. Signal uses your active internet connection rather than your carrier's voice network, which means the call works worldwide as long as both parties have an internet connection.

## Make a Video Call

Tap the video camera icon in any conversation to start a face-to-face video call. Signal automatically switches between voice and video during an active call if you turn your camera on or off. You can also flip between your front and rear cameras at any time.

## Call Quality and Reliability

Signal calls are designed to adapt to your connection quality. On strong WiFi or 5G, you get crisp HD audio and smooth video. If your signal weakens, the app adjusts dynamically to keep the call connected.

## Encryption on Every Call

Every voice and video call in Signal is secured by the same Signal Protocol that protects your text messages. The encryption is negotiated between your device and the recipient's device automatically, so you never have to enable it manually. Not even the Signal servers can decrypt your call content.

<Note>
  Group calls are also encrypted end-to-end, protecting the audio and video streams for every participant in the group.
